I got up to investigate and discovered that the floor drain in the bathroom (this is a basement apartment) was the source of the mystery sound. Water, dirt and I don't want to know what else covered the floor. Ew.

I could hear a load of laundry in the dryer. Brandon (the guy staying at my landlady's while she was out of town) was outside so I went to ask him if he had more laundry to do. That was his only load. Whew! And Kristen's (my landlady) return from her road trip was imminent so we could alert her when she got back. Cool. I went back inside and started cleanup. By 9a it was pretty much under control... Or so I thought.

Kristen returned and I filled her in on the situation on my way out the door to physical therapy at 11a. After PT I went to run a few errands. While at the pet store, Kristen called to let me know that there was water in the utility room. Ok, don't panic. The path from the floor drain to the utility room is through the kitchen. "Would you mind checking the apartment?" I asked. So she went into the kitchen. "There is a big puddle of water in the kitchen," Not too big a deal since the kitchen is linoleum tiled. "and there is water and dirt in the bathroom." Ok, I pretty much expected that. "Oh, shit." was the next sentence to cross the wire. The water had also gone out the other side of the bathroom and down into the hallway which is carpeted. Luckily it didn't travel any farther than that!

Kristen and her traveling companion had taken baths - and who could blame them after driving from Montana the day before. But the drainage of two tubs of water was just too much for the already struggling sewer line. Time to call Roto-Rooter©. While Kristen dealt with her landlorderly duties, I mopped up as much of the water as I could with every towel I could find. Then Kristen had Brandon take her to rent a carpet cleaner (extractor?) from Home Depot to try and get the water out of the carpet. It did a surprisingly good job, but even now, if you stand in one spot in the hallway for a a bit your feet start to feel wet. If we're lucky it will dry out, if we're not it will mold. Ben said last night that it was starting to smell a little, but I couldn't smell anything. I guess all we can do for now is keep an eye (or a nose) on it.

The rest of the weekend was fairly uneventful. Lots of errand running on Saturday, with a trip to Ikea to find some kind of cabinet to put in the bathroom so that stuff is no longer in cardboard boxes on the floor. We found a really cool one and a new towel rack and toilet paper holder. Ben and I put the cabinet together and hung the new towel rack on Sunday after major bathroom cleaning. Now it's my favorite room in the apartment!

Illustration Friday: b&w

This is my very first blog post and also my first post for Illustration Friday.
